Hons in Latin (HBA)

Latin is offered by the Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto's St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Arts (HBA) with Major or Minor options. Classics is the study of the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome, including their literature, religion, mythology, history, philosophy and art, engaging students with questions such as the nature of freedom and the basis of political power and legitimacy. The Latin stream concentrates on reading and studying the Latin language and its literature through a sequence of courses: the introductory course requires no prior knowledge of Latin, and later courses build progressively on earlier language study, with prerequisites enforced. Advanced 400-level Latin courses extend their 300-level counterparts by meeting for an additional hour, covering more texts, and adding an integrative, inquiry-based research component. Latin can be combined with other Arts & Science programs of study to complete the HBA degree.
