Program details

Overview

Media and Communication Studies is offered by the University of Toronto Scarborough, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Arts (HBA) as a Major program with a program length of four years and Fall and Winter entry. The program examines the opportunities and limits of media institutions and information technologies from multiple perspectives, and students choose between two streams: Media Studies, which evaluates media, its underlying ideologies, and its social implications, and Journalism Studies, which investigates how cultures of information sharing are evolving. Almost half of the credits needed for the degree are taken within Media and Communication Studies itself. First-year required courses include Media Foundations, a survey of critical approaches to media studies covering transnational and intersectional perspectives on arts, society, and institutions, and Media Ethics, which introduces ethical issues in media across advertising, public relations, journalism, mass media entertainment, and online culture. The program does not include a co-op option.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Ontario applicants apply through OUAC using program code TUC and require the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with at least six 4U/M courses including Grade 12 English; the co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission. Media and Communication Studies is offered as a Major at the University of Toronto Scarborough. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's English proficiency requirement, e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 89 overall with at least 22 in Speaking and Writing (tests before 21 January 2026).
