Professional Writing and Communication is offered at the University of Toronto Mississauga through the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Arts. The program is available as a Major or a Minor and examines how written and oral communication function across professional, academic, artistic, personal and public settings. Coursework takes a workshop-style format that emphasizes the multicultural, multi-modal and team-oriented character of professional writing practice, giving students experience with creative nonfiction, cross-cultural communication, and research-based writing. Sample courses include Journalistic Investigation, Podcasting, and Making a Book, covering skills such as scripting, editing, book production, and publishing to digital platforms. Graduates are trained as critical thinkers and flexible, reflective writers and editors who apply knowledge of rhetoric and language across academic disciplines and professional practice. The program prepares students for careers such as communications specialist, public relations specialist, technical writer, editorial assistant, and screenwriter.
