The Master of Arts (MA) in English is offered by the Department of English at the University of Toronto and is one of the largest graduate English programs in North America. The program gives students a broad grounding in British, Canadian, Indigenous, American, and postcolonial literatures alongside current literary theory, and some graduates proceed directly into the department's PhD program. It is completed over three sessions of full-time study (Fall, Winter, Summer), and a part-time option is also available. Admission requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in English, with a minimum GPA of 3.3 (B+) over the final two years of study and evidence of first-class work, plus a minimum of seven full-year undergraduate courses in English or the equivalent in half-year courses. Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency, for example through the TOEFL iBT, where the minimum overall score required is 5.0 out of 6.0. The program is delivered in person.
