Overview
The Master of Arts (MA) in History, offered by the University of Toronto's Department of History, is a broadly diversified graduate program covering major geographic, chronological and thematic areas of historical scholarship, including Canada, the United States, Europe, Russia, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and fields such as the history of medicine and women's history. Students may complete the degree through coursework and a research paper (3.5 full-course equivalents) or, with special permission, coursework and a thesis (2.0 full-course equivalents), in each case including a required methods course and additional history courses. The program is delivered in person, normally completed in 3 sessions full-time (6 part-time), within a 3-year full-time (6-year part-time) time limit; full-time students are expected to complete all requirements within 12 months. Admission requires an appropriate bachelor's degree from a recognized university with at least a B+ standing and at least 6.0 full-course equivalents in history. Graduates receive the Master of Arts (MA) credential.

Admission Requirements: An appropriate bachelor's degree from a recognized university with at least a B+ standing. Successful completion of at least 6.0 full-course equivalents (FCEs) in history; applicants without adequate history training may be required to complete additional undergraduate history courses before being considered for admission. Applicants must submit an Application Information Form, three letters of recommendation, a 500-word specific research proposal, and a writing sample of no more than 3,000 words.
