Overview
The Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization allows you to expand your Indigenous language proficiency while revitalizing your language in your community. Demonstrate linguistically and culturally grounded teaching strategies. You’ll graduate certified to teach grades K-12 in band-run and public schools in BC. The first two years of this program are delivered in partnership with language communities.
The Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization offered through the Department of Indigenous Education is a community-based, cohort-driven program that is designed for BC Indigenous community members who want to learn their language and become teachers of their language. The Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization is targeted towards those who want to become professional K-12 teachers in hopes of teaching in either a First Nations administrated or public school. Students will continue building their language capacity to ensure they are qualified to teach in an immersion context if desirable. Students enter this program after completing a Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization or equivalent coursework approved by the Chair of Indigenous Education. The complete program (including Diploma) is composed of 75.0 units normally taken over 5 academic years.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This Bachelor of Education is the final step of a laddered, community-based sequence rather than a direct-entry degree. UVic offers the Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency (CILP) for Indigenous community members building proficiency in their language, then the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization (DILR) for students who have finished the CILP or an approved equivalent and are ready for Year 2 study in language teaching methodology, revitalisation practice and community engagement. The BEd is for DILR graduates who want to earn BC K-12 Professional Teaching Certification while keeping their own language and culture central to how they teach. Each delivery is specific to one language community and is set up through a partnership with the Department of Indigenous Education, so intakes are not on the university-wide cycle: UVic asks prospective students to email [email protected] about intakes for their language and for admissions support. All applicants must satisfy UVic's English language requirement: transcripts alone suffice after four years of full-time English-medium study in Canada, otherwise a test is needed (IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band under 6.0, TOEFL iBT 88 with no section under 20, CAEL 70, Duolingo 120, PTE Academic 65, Cambridge C1/C2 180 or four-skill MET 64).

International applicants use the same portal and face identical dates, since UVic publishes no separate international deadline. UVic treats these as fixed annual dates rather than rolling admission, though it warns any programme can close early without notice. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
