Overview
English at the University of Waterloo leads to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the Faculty of Arts and integrates literary studies with rhetoric, new media, and discourse analysis. Students pursue original research in one of four fields: Experimental Digital Media, Genres, Literary Theory and Discourse Analysis, or Rhetoric, developing a research project that combines literary, rhetorical, and digital approaches while also building teaching skills. The program normally follows a Master of Arts in English, though outstanding candidates may be considered for direct entry from a bachelor's degree. Applicants submit a Plan of Study describing their intended research direction as part of the application. The program is offered full-time and on-campus, with a single intake each fall.

Admission Requirements: Applicants normally hold a Master of Arts (MA) in English, though outstanding candidates with direct entry from a bachelor's degree may be considered. Only candidates with an average of 85% or higher are considered. The application requires three academic references and a Plan of Study. Applicants whose prior education was not in English must present TOEFL iBT 5 overall (writing and speaking 5 each) or IELTS Academic 7.5 overall (writing and speaking 7.0 each).
