Overview
VCC's 16-week full-time certificate trains technicians to reprocess reusable medical devices such as surgical instruments and patient care equipment, with responsibility, accountability and patient safety at its core. The program runs Monday to Friday and pairs two concurrent courses: MDR Theory (MDRT 1201), delivered through classroom instruction, group discussion, case studies and simulations, and MDR Clinical (MDRT 1211), completed on placement in hospital medical device reprocessing departments across the Lower Mainland including sites such as Vancouver General Hospital and Royal Columbian Hospital. Classes and clinical shifts may include evenings. Graduates receive a certificate and are eligible to attempt the Canadian Standards Association's Certified Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (CMDRT) examination.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 12 graduation or equivalent, plus OACP 1108 Medical Terminology 1 (or equivalent, completed within the last five years) and MSKL 1104 Interpersonal Communication Skills – Health (or equivalent). The English requirement is met by English Studies 12 with a minimum 'C+' grade, or an equivalent English Language Proficiency assessment at the same level. Accepted applicants must complete a Criminal Record Check before starting practicum placements; a result flagging risk to vulnerable populations bars completion of the practicum and graduation. Before clinical placement, students must submit a negative TB skin test (or, if positive, a negative TB chest x-ray) and a completed immunization record; clinical sites may refuse a placement to a student who cannot provide proof of immunization, serum titers or TB screening.
