The Nautical Science degree trains students for deck and navigation roles in merchant shipping. The Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry has approved the programme, and it follows the STCW requirements for seafarer training, certification and watchkeeping set by the IMO.
The indicative study plan runs over eight semesters. It begins with mathematics, navigation and collision-regulation subjects and moves on to applied navigation, GMDSS, ECDIS, ship steering control systems, marine insurance, ship management and port and terminal management. Two of the semesters are given over to practical training on board a vessel, and the remaining teaching draws on simulators, laboratory work and field trips.
Graduates are prepared for careers such as deck officer, ship manager, maritime inspector or navigating officer. The programme is aimed at a shipping sector that includes many ship-owning and ship-management companies based in Cyprus, and students may take part in Erasmus+ placements abroad.
