IMAESC is a joint master's degree in adult education with a social-change orientation, offered under the Erasmus Mundus scheme by a group of European universities that includes Tallinn University. Students study full time for 24 months, including three compulsory mobility periods, plus a summer school that students may choose to attend.
Students attend classes in Glasgow, Malta and Tallinn, and the Open University of Cyprus teaches online courses during the Malta and Tallinn stages. Students complete coursework, write a dissertation and take part in three adult learning placements, which are designed to give experience in three countries: Scotland, then Malta or Ireland, then Estonia, and students may also spend time in Malaysia for a cultural experience outside Europe.
The degree is awarded jointly, and the partners involved depend on the study track. Students who spend the second semester at the University of Malta follow the Critical Issues, Policy and Curriculum track, while those at Maynooth University follow the Community Engagement and Education track. Optional summer schools are held in Canada and Malaysia.
