The Doctoral Programme in Science covers seven core discipline areas within the natural sciences and mathematics: atmospheric sciences, chemistry, computer science, geosciences and geography, mathematics and statistics, materials research and nanoscience, and the study of particle physics alongside the wider universe sciences. Both fundamental and more applied research are pursued within the programme, with individual projects addressing global challenges such as climate change, energy, health, technology, and the sustainable use of resources, using a mix of theoretical and experimental methods depending on the discipline involved. Doctoral researchers regularly work alongside partner faculties, other universities, and research organisations and businesses outside the university, reflecting the deliberately multidisciplinary design of the programme. Such breadth is meant to give doctoral researchers wider scientific perspectives than any single-discipline programme could, preparing them for eventual roles across industry, government agencies, international organisations, research institutes, and academia itself.
