MA/MS in Japanologie

The Master's programme in Japanese Studies, offered in a combined two-subject model at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, explores the history of the Japanese language, its relationship with other languages and the social changes that Japan has undergone. Its questions cover historical exchange with neighbouring Asian states and the shifting character of language across centuries. Language training is intensive and interactive, and students must keep up with a fast pace to avoid falling behind. The second subject shapes the overall study plan, and students use the advanced courses to deepen their command of Japanese in both spoken and written forms. Current students describe the course as a preparation for meaningful conversation and discussion with Japanese speakers, though real encounters differ from textbook exchanges. The programme suits people who enjoy languages and want to work with Japanese in academic, cultural or professional settings.
