This three-year course from the School of Maritime Science combines a degree with a cadetship, preparing students for careers as marine engineers. Study is organised around Gibraltar's shipping industry, with practical exposure at the Gibdock shipyard and structured time at sea.
The degree has approval from the UK's maritime regulator, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, which allows the required sea time to be reduced to 12 months. Graduates may become eligible, subject to completing sea time and external examinations, to apply for the certificate of competency as Engineer Officer of the Watch. The university arranges cadetship placements with Gibraltar's port authority and maritime administration.
Teaching includes 3D modelling and simulation, so students can see how complex marine machinery works before working with it on board. Modules cover propulsion and auxiliary systems, marine electrical systems, mechanics and thermodynamics, and business and project management shared with nautical students.
