PhD in Sociology

The PhD in Sociology at the University of Macau aims to develop critical thinking and the ability to carry out careful, methodologically sound research that draws on qualitative and quantitative approaches. Graduates should be able to add to scholarly discussion of social issues and to explain sociological or criminological knowledge to wider audiences. Students can concentrate on criminology and criminal justice; on ageing, demography, family and health; on computational social science and research methodology; or on comparative, international and political sociology together with cultural studies. The learning outcomes stress mastering advanced theory and methods, collecting empirical data independently or in teams, and writing manuscripts for publication. Qualified applicants can apply for scholarships and research assistantships. The page describes a monthly stipend and a travel allowance under the UM Macao PhD Scholarship and a starting monthly stipend under the PhD Assistantship, neither of which covers tuition. Most students are from Macao, with many postgraduate students from mainland China.
