This two-year Master of Arts aims to train professional translators and interpreters who have linguistic and cultural competence and the skills to serve both local and international markets. It also offers a broad, in-depth study of the many issues in translation and interpreting. The medium of instruction is Chinese together with English or Portuguese.
Language pairs include Chinese-English and Chinese-Portuguese, while English-Portuguese is not currently open for admission. Courses cover both translation theory and practical interpreting and translation, and paid teaching or research assistantships are available.
Intended outcomes include understanding differences between English and Chinese and between Portuguese and Chinese expression, producing translations suited to genre and purpose, and acting as professional translators or interpreters aware of codes of conduct and ethics. The university has announced that the Portuguese-based specializations will stop being offered from the 2027/2028 academic year and refers applicants to a new Master of Arts in Portuguese.
