Overview
This professional architecture course is the second-tier qualification that follows a Diploma in Design Foundation Studies lasting one year and a three-year BSc (Hons) in Built Environment Studies, and together these prepare graduates for a warrant, accredited in the EU, to work as an Architect. The structure follows the Bologna Process and the combined programmes reflect Article 46 of Directive 2005/36/EC on the training of architects.
Teaching balances theoretical knowledge relevant to architecture against workshops where architectural design is practised. In the last year the taught and research work comes together in a Master-level Dissertation and a Synoptic Final Project, which rely on the student's own independent research.
The course lasts four semesters, carries 120 ECTS credits at MQF Level 7, and is full-time, mainly taught with a research element.
Admission requires a University of Malta degree of the first cycle in Built Environment Studies, at the level of Second Class Honours or higher, or a qualification that Senate, on the Faculty Board's recommendation, judges comparable. Applicants admitted on a comparable qualification may be made to pass an assessment set by the Faculty Board.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UM applies course-specific entry requirements under its regulations and bye-laws. Local applicants are assessed on qualifications such as the Matriculation Certificate, International Baccalaureate, or European Baccalaureate; international applicants hold overseas qualifications evaluated individually for comparability with UM's standards, with no extra requirements beyond the course's own criteria. MATSEC-qualification applicants must apply as soon as they receive their first result slip after the May/June session; students sitting September resits should apply by the course's first deadline rather than waiting on resit results. After evaluation, the Office of the Registrar issues a decision letter. Admission may also be granted via Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses.
