MA/MS in Society, Sustainability and Planning

The programme centres on the human factor in spatial interventions, examining the cultural, social, political and economic conditions in which decisions on such interventions take place. It emphasises the growing role of self-organising citizen collectives in shaping places, examining why various stakeholders and social groups accept, resist or reject spatial change, and how surroundings can be designed to meet diverse needs, with spatial justice treated as a guiding principle. Attention is also given to how spatial planning can support goals from the UN's sustainable development agenda, such as eliminating poverty, a clean environment and healthy ageing, working alongside citizens and civil-society groups.
