The programme offers specialised study of China, Japan or Korea within the broader master's in Asian Studies, combining coursework with advanced training in the language of the chosen country. Study draws on a wide range of disciplines, among them anthropology, art and art history, cultural studies, development studies, economics, history, linguistics, literature, media, philosophy, politics and international relations, religious studies, and sociology. Language training is central, with students expected to apply their developing fluency by using primary sources written in Mandarin, Japanese or Korean when writing their thesis. Teaching takes place in small classes that allow regular contact between students and lecturers.
