The Korean Studies master's at Leiden combines graduate-level research on Korea, spanning its pre-modern past and present-day society, with a full academic year spent at a partner university in South Korea. Students choose from a wide curriculum covering religion, popular culture, and modern history, often working directly with primary source materials rather than relying on secondary accounts. The Leiden University Library's collection of Asian artefacts supports this research-based approach throughout the degree. Two semesters take place at a partner institution in South Korea, giving students sustained exposure to the language, culture, and academic environment there alongside their coursework in Leiden. The structure suits students who want to examine Korea from several angles at once, historical, religious, cultural, and contemporary, building both regional expertise and independent research skills through the combination of Leiden-based study and an extended stay abroad.
