This history master's studies processes of migration, urbanisation, economic development, and growing global interaction, focusing on themes that sit at the centre of current societal and political debate. These are examined from a comparative, historical angle covering the period from 1500 to the present, set within wider frameworks such as the growth of trade networks, the rise of multinational companies, periods of economic growth and stagnation, and regional unification. Drawing on Leiden's extensive background in studying migration and ethnicity, and on a diverse body of teaching staff, students learn to understand and help shape today's conversations about how migration, city growth, globalisation, economic expansion, and inequality connect, viewed through a historical and comparative lens. The degree also looks at how institutions tied to cities and the state shape who is included or excluded, at urban crime and criminal conduct, and at how freedom and its absence — slavery among them — have developed over time. The programme offers three specialisations: a general Cities, Migration and Global Interdependence track, Economic History, and the interdisciplinary Governance of Migration and Diversity.
