Program details

Overview

The programme trains students to set premodern Europe within a global context and think comparatively about how power operated there, through courses built around concepts such as citizenship, holy war and dynasty that place historical experiences from different regions side by side. Students develop their own research ideas on communities, states and networks spanning Europe and the Mediterranean in the period 1000 to 1800, examining how power was exercised before the modern era, and how the knowledge systems behind it took shape, spread and faced challenge. Teaching staff are engaged in related large-scale research projects, including on feuds and factions, the Burgundian nobility, and war memories and identity formation, and students engage directly with current scholarly debates to build their ability to analyse and critique academic ideas and theories.
