MA/MS in North American Studies

This one-year master's programme takes an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to studying the United States, examining both the role the U.S. plays regionally and globally and the influence of regional and global developments on the U.S. itself. Key areas explored include slavery, migration and emancipation movements, human rights and the political history of international relations, immigration and ethnicity, identity construction and memory politics, and environmental justice, approached historically and across disciplines, with recurring critical attention to the idea of U.S. exceptionalism. Students learn to carry out independent multidisciplinary research, apply theoretical insights, and engage critically with scholarly debate, and are encouraged to complete an internship either in the Netherlands or abroad.
