Overview
This one-year master studies the natural and human-driven physical and geochemical processes, patterns and dynamics that shape the Earth's continental and coastal systems, with physical geographers and hydrologists cast as key interpreters of nature's behaviour as pressure on the environment keeps growing. Its themes draw on decades of accumulated knowledge in coastal and river science, hydrological processes, land degradation in mountainous terrain and Quaternary geology, and it engages with societal problems such as rising vulnerability to climate change, natural hazards including flooding, storms and mass movements, and the effects of human activity on the physical environment, including the hydrological cycle. The programme has a strong international reputation in environmental modelling, geographic information systems and geostatistics, with further attention given to water-related subjects: climate, the environment, bioremediation, and how viruses travel through groundwater.
