Wageningen's Economics of Sustainability master's examines how economic actors interact with the natural environment, set against a backdrop of serious environmental strain, including a warming climate and shrinking biodiversity, that puts pressure on welfare worldwide. Students train as quantitative economists able to analyse practical problems touching food production, natural resources, and the wider living environment, and to design economic responses that support a shift toward sustainability. Alongside strong training in quantitative economic techniques, the programme covers relevant economic theory at the micro, behavioural, and institutional level, providing the conceptual tools needed to understand both the roots of these problems and their possible solutions. Subjects covered range from pollution and environmental damage to sustainable markets and the bio-economy, extending to rural and urban development questions and to concerns like ecological thresholds being crossed, uneven access to resources, and inequality that continues to widen.
