Overview

The specialisation teaches students to design sustainable production systems for seaweed, sponges, corals, shrimp, shellfish and fish, spanning options from sea enclosures and semi-extensive ponds to high-tech recirculation systems. Coursework covers the economic and social aspects of aquaculture, fish and algal biology, and aquaculture production system design. Thesis projects have included topics such as using microbial food webs in ponds to process food waste as feed, improving seaweed attachment to substrates, and applying whole-genome bioinformatics to patterns of variation in fish evolution and domestication.
