Overview
The programme builds thorough knowledge in a selected area of biology, developing critical thinking and analytical skills through an original research project carried out within a local research group, using analytical tools such as statistics and genomics across marine, terrestrial or human-influenced environments. There are five specialisations. Aquaculture covers nutrition, physiology, health and welfare in farmed aquatic species, with projects run at a university research station or with regional industry. Marine Ecology examines how organisms interact within marine environments using molecular techniques, population ecology, conservation biology and modelling of water dynamics. Genomics studies the structure, function and evolution of genomes across molecular, cellular and population levels, including the use of bioinformatics to analyse large datasets, often linking to ecology, reproduction, physiology or toxicology. Terrestrial Ecology and Nature Management focuses on the sustainable use of land and natural resources to protect biodiversity and ecosystem health. Animal Science addresses animal welfare, climate impact, biodiversity and technology within livestock production.
