The 120-credit disciplinary master in art history develops an understanding of the historical, cultural and social aspects of art and visual culture. The focus is Western art history, but the programme also covers institutional critique, postcolonialism, new art history and other critical theory, as well as art made in and reflecting on the global situation today. Students learn to ask what counts as art in different periods.
Teaching questions the theory and method of the discipline itself. In the thesis, students use academic methods independently to examine a source or research problem in visual culture in the broad sense. Interdisciplinary collaboration is possible in the thesis. The programme gives students the knowledge needed to work on art, architecture and visual culture across periods from antiquity to the present.
