The PhD in Media Studies under Doctoral Studies at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies prepares researchers in mass-communication theory and runs, on average, around four years. Candidates choose among upwards of ten research tracks — media's political economy, media systems across the Arab and Middle East region, ties between media and foreign policy, media's pull on public opinion, and the sociology of news events — building on both classical and current scholarship.
Teaching draws on academic staff within the Institute's Media Studies faculty, and candidates engage with both long-standing and up-to-date mass-communication scholarship, traditional and contemporary alike. After foundational doctoral coursework in sociology, humanities, and research methods, candidates sit a comprehensive examination covering their chosen fields before moving into original dissertation research, finished under the supervision of an experienced professor who guides the work from design through defense.
