Program details

Overview

This second-cycle programme at the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School introduces nanoscience, the study of systems built from components of nanometric dimensions. Students examine how the structure and behaviour of materials at atomic and molecular scale give rise to their bulk properties, and how that understanding can be used to design new compounds, devices and machines. The field touches almost every branch of the economy. Typical examples include computer components of atomic size, compounds that can detect single viruses or bacteria, molecule-sized magnets, micromotors and compounds that harness sunlight to control environmental pollutants. Since the 2024/2025 academic year the school has also hosted GREENANO, an Erasmus Mundus module run with partners at the Université de Lorraine and Tor Vergata. Students spend the first semester in Lorraine and the second at Tor Vergata, preparing to work as engineers, researchers or sustainability managers in nanomaterials development. The programme is worth 120 ECTS credits over two years.
