This second-cycle programme is taught mainly by researchers based at ZRC SAZU, the research centre of Slovenia's academy of sciences and arts. Students can take part in ongoing fundamental research and see how findings are applied to areas such as environmental protection and natural hazards.
The curriculum links living and non-living nature across geology, palaeontology, karstology, ecology and evolution, plus environmental protection. Compulsory courses cover biodiversity and evolution, the fundamentals of karstology, management of natural hazards, scientific approaches in the natural sciences and the Earth system. Students then follow one of three modules: biodiversity, ecology and evolution; palaeobiology and sedimentary geology; or karstology. Elective courses let them either go deeper into their chosen module or widen the interdisciplinary scope of their studies.
Graduates are expected to connect knowledge from several natural-science disciplines, analyse specific problems in depth, and carry research through from design and choice of method to laboratory, computational and field work and the presentation of results.
