Overview

Painting, sculpture, buildings, photographs and installations are treated here as central to human culture. Your study covers the period from the medieval centuries to now, and you ask how images influence the societies that make and view them. Researchers from across the discipline do the teaching, and the capital's galleries and historic monuments serve as a classroom. Required modules examine debates within the field, the methods art historians use and the way a work lives on through time. You can choose a small number of options from other subjects. Attendance can be full-time, part-time or through a route that starts with a foundation year. Writing, research and critical thinking are the abilities you develop, and they lead to jobs in galleries and auction houses, publishing, education and heritage organisations, or to further research.
