Program details

Overview

The PhD in Archaeology is an original research degree built around a thesis, developed within a structured environment that supports both independent work and collaboration. The thesis topic is usually proposed by the student and settled with a supervisor, who helps with methodology, analysis and writing. Students may also complete training in research design, statistical analysis and safety. Candidates are assessed on a thesis that must add meaningfully to the discipline, followed by an oral examination covering the thesis and its wider field. Successful candidates show that they can design investigations, interpret results and place their findings within the broader subject. Students attend lectures and courses that their supervisor considers appropriate.
