Overview

Doctoral students in pathology join a research team and carry out a project guided by a principal investigator. The department runs induction and safety training for newcomers, and a broad range of general and specialist skills courses can be taken alongside the research. There is no coursework that is formally examined. Instead, progress is judged at the end of the first year through a written report and an oral examination, and successful performance there leads to registration for the PhD, giving the early stage of study a defined shape. Students show their findings at the department's yearly symposium during their second year, and speak at the postgraduate seminars during their third. As the end of the degree approaches, they can also join valedictory seminars open across the whole department, which help them get ready for the closing phase of their studies.
