Photonic and Electronic Systems

Run by an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training, this four-year programme combines a research master's with a PhD and is delivered jointly with UCL. The first year is the master's stage, giving students a solid grounding in photonic and electronic systems; moving on to the remaining three years of doctoral research depends on doing well in that stage. The aim is to train engineers who can lead, with deep subject understanding as well as research skill and knowledge of technologies and their uses. Students also gain commercial awareness, covering the basics of management theory and how technology, management and entrepreneurship relate. They examine what drives the economics of photonic technology, and study methods of costing and technology forecasting that determine whether new solutions are taken up. Eligible applicants can receive full funding. Graduates are ready for leadership and investigative positions in universities and companies developing and applying photonic and electronic technologies.
