Overview

This is mainly a research degree, with very little formal teaching. Students become part of the research life of the department and institute that hosts them, a setting known internationally for its work on what causes mental health conditions and how they can be treated. Each person carries out a project guided by a main supervisor, while a separate advisor offers extra teaching and advice, so that students can reach more members of staff. The topic is agreed while applying and reflects the supervisor's interests, which is why applicants are encouraged to contact the group leader whose research attracts them most. Because the department takes a translational approach, training links questions asked in the laboratory with results that matter in clinical settings. Graduates can pursue university research careers, or take research posts in clinical, translational and commercial environments that need expertise in the science of mental health.
