Overview

This MPhil by research builds independent research capacity within Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, concentrating on the Middle East. Students deepen their knowledge of original texts and of the scholarly work written about their chosen specialism, and they develop the confidence to design their own projects. Competence in at least one regional language is important for this research, and Arabic, Hebrew or Persian are the languages most commonly needed. The degree prepares students for the demands of doctoral work and suits people who already show aptitude for independent scholarship. Those who finish the course may continue to a PhD or move into roles that value sophisticated research, analytical thinking and clear written and spoken communication. The Degree Committee considers each application on its own merits.
