Overview

This MPhil is intended for graduates who want to address pressing global problems through practical engineering solutions. Rather than teaching engineering techniques alone, it supplies the wider context in which those solutions must operate. Students learn that engineers work within the limits set by the planet's resources and must balance competing demands. Topics include decision-making when information is incomplete, managing environmental limits through efficiency and pollution control, and taking account of whole-life costs across projects. The course emphasises leadership and the capacity to design solutions that meet social needs within a sustainability framework. Graduates are equipped to lead change in complex settings.
