Overview

Heritage studies is an interdisciplinary field, and this MPhil encourages a critical view of heritage as something belonging to public life. Students investigate the theory behind it, the values attached to it and the ways it is used, and they consider its significance today. They also look at the broader context surrounding heritage bodies. Participants learn the approaches and methods favoured by professionals and discover the range of careers open in the sector. Skills covered include constructing and analysing arguments, writing, presenting, debating and researching. On completing the course, students should be able to apply critical thinking to a specialism of their choosing and carry out independent research. The degree is a good fit for graduates wanting to understand how societies preserve and interpret the past, whether they aim for professional roles or further academic study.
