Overview

The MPhil in Social Anthropological Research is a nine-month full-time course that develops a critical and well-informed understanding of social anthropology. It gives students a foundation for focused individual research and builds their capacity to work in academic and other professional contexts. Students attend a core seminar on contemporary themes and concerns in the discipline, alongside sessions on professional and skills development. Six seminars on specialist modules cover research methods and themes linked to staff research interests, which change each year. Individual supervision supports students through their dissertation and essay writing. For those who intend to continue to doctoral work, the course helps them acquire the research skills they need and prepare a well-planned and focused PhD proposal. It is a clear route for students who want to move from broad anthropological study to a defined research project.
