Program details

Overview

The studio art major invites students to work across many techniques and media, such as drawing, painting, ceramics and metalwork, as well as fibers, glass, photography, sculpture and book arts. The goal is to refine personal expression and to use art to affect the surrounding community. Students begin studio courses in their first year and also study art history. Courses co-taught by art and science faculty approach work through a STEAM lens, and studios are designed to support sustainable practice. Each semester brings contact with working artists, and students develop a community art assessment with a visiting professional. An internship of at least one semester is part of the major. Faculty in the program have extensive experience as artists, and the college encourages students to develop an active arts culture on campus while building a portfolio and professional skills.
