Students in this 61-64 unit major learn to tackle problems from many fields by constructing models in mathematics, using computational algorithms and interpreting what comes out. Two options are available: a standard applied mathematics track and an actuarial science concentration. A minor in data science is suggested.
Core courses include two semesters of calculus, an introduction to data science, and, in the standard track, computation and modeling, numerical analysis and complex analysis.
The major leads toward quantitative work in actuarial science and cryptography, in economics and finance, in data analysis and statistics, in research for business, government or academia, and in operations research or management consulting. Graduates have gone on to graduate schools and industry roles.
Future secondary mathematics teachers are directed to the BA in Mathematics, and those wanting more depth in another STEM discipline to the BS in Mathematics.
