PhD in Sociology

This doctorate trains people to become researchers and teachers of sociology. Each student develops deep command of theory and empirical work within a specialty area, with the goal of producing original research that matters to the discipline. The curriculum pairs a common foundation in theory and methods with many elective options picked in consultation with an advisor. Students are urged to complete the introductory sequence early in their studies and to take part in seminars designed for the entering cohort. The degree does not demand proficiency in a foreign language. After graduating, holders of the degree are prepared for academic and research positions. Doctoral candidates should also be capable of teaching undergraduates. Applicants need a bachelor's degree at minimum, and prior study of sociology is welcome but not required.
