MA/MS in English Language and Literature, General

The master's in English at Boston University gives wide-ranging preparation in literary studies, offering courses on eras, authors, movements and critical theory. Although the English department is big and diverse, its graduate program is relatively small and personal, and well-known scholars lead a range of small seminars every term. Degree candidates complete eight four-unit courses, including at least five advanced seminars and a course on critical theory, methodology or how criticism has developed. They must show fairly full coverage of British and American writing from several periods, and transfer credit is not accepted. Selected Metropolitan College courses may also count toward graduate credit. Students need a minimum grade average and must satisfy a language requirement. Graduates are expected to follow ethical practice and to communicate clearly with specialist and general readers.
