Cert in American Sign Language

Students who want to communicate in American Sign Language can start here, building both language ability and cultural understanding. The certificate also serves as preparation for a separate interpreting credential. Twenty-one credits are required. Those who finish successfully may apply for competitive entry to the interpreting certificate, which means this credential doubles as a pathway for people aiming at that profession. Admission to the interpreting program is not guaranteed, so interested students should review its requirements early. Beyond interpreting, the certificate is useful for anyone who works with deaf and hard of hearing communities, such as educators, health care staff, and human services workers. Cultural study sits alongside language practice because fluency depends on understanding how the community communicates. The catalog lists each course with its code and credit value, and the American Sign Language interpreting program page provides more background.
