Overview

Social work is a concentration for sociology majors. It helps students see how institutions affect different groups unevenly and builds skills for improving outcomes for people across society. Students study how public policy develops, why advocacy matters and what role social work plays, with particular attention to marginalized communities. The curriculum starts from six sociology core courses, including an introduction to sociology, qualitative and quantitative methods, and social theory, and adds required concentration courses. Issues such as mental health, addiction and food justice frame the discussion of how social welfare responds to current needs.
