The Journalism Certificate is an add-on credential for students already working toward a bachelor's degree at Ferris State. It builds practical skills in news writing, reporting and editing, so graduates of other communication-related majors can show employers they can produce accurate and responsible content.
Coursework covers writing for mass media, reporting, and the role of media in society, followed by a choice between feature and opinion writing or publication editing. Classes run at the Big Rapids location, over the internet, or through a blend of both.
Students in the BS in Journalism and Technical Communication cannot take this certificate, since that degree already covers the same ground. Required credits can shift with placement and prerequisites, so students are encouraged to check their plan with an advisor. Anyone who returns after an interruption generally follows the curriculum in force at the time of return. The certificate is coordinated through the Languages and Literature department. The program is based at the Main Campus of Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan.
