BA/BS in American Sign Language

This on-campus major teaches American Sign Language together with Deaf community heritage, traditions and written works, framed through social justice. A minor is also offered. The curriculum provides up to eight semesters of language instruction, a longer sequence than comparable programs elsewhere in the region, and most courses are taught by Deaf instructors so students learn from a Deaf perspective. A Deaf Studies concentration is available. The university reports that it is the only public institution in Massachusetts with an ASL and Deaf Studies major. Fluent signers are needed as interpreters and service providers in education, health care, counseling, law and finance. As part of a public university in Framingham, Massachusetts, the major draws on small classes and close contact with faculty advisers.
