The MA in Anthropology teaches the history of critical thought in the field and how to shape a research topic. Training in ethnographic and field techniques comes first, followed by mentoring through the research and writing of a thesis or project.
Research ethics are part of the training. Students may concentrate on cultural anthropology or on bioarchaeology.
Graduates move into government, private firms, non-governmental organisations and museums, or continue to doctoral study. Satisfactory progress is monitored, and students can be dismissed if they repeatedly fail to meet it.
Applicants are expected to satisfy the university's graduate admission standards in addition to any requirements set by the department. The catalog sets out the degree requirements, relevant academic policies and contacts, and prospective students are encouraged to review them and to speak with the program before applying.
