This criminal justice major offers a rigorous, evidence-based curriculum that prepares students to be informed community members and critical readers of information. It looks at the social context of crime, including racial and economic inequality and law, and at the work of police, the courts, and sentencing.
Related subjects include reentry, juvenile justice, and victimization. The major puts strong weight on theory, including criminology and the study of deviance and social control, and on research methods.
It is the department's most popular major. Faculty include full-time professors and practitioners with public or private sector experience. Many students pair it with a second major or a minor, for example in public health, politics, psychology, law and society, or business. Graduates may pursue advanced study in criminology or law. A student in this major may not also declare sociology.
