This sociology major offers a rigorous, empirical curriculum that prepares students to be informed community members and critical consumers of information. A flexible study plan introduces the sociological imagination and its link to current social issues, supplies theoretical tools, and builds a foundation in research methods.
Topics include city life, social class and inequality, ethnicity, gender, and social problems. Living in a city gives majors real experience with quantitative and qualitative research and with sociological observation and analysis. Research opportunities and internships are available in the Washington area.
Graduates are ready to conduct research, take advocacy positions, and lead in nonprofits and other organizations. Students must earn at least a C-minus in courses counting toward the degree and may not combine this major with criminal justice or human services and social justice.
